Masturbation: is it a sin according to the Bible?

The Bible does not mention masturbation directly. Therefore, there is no "verse" that explicitly names it as sin. However, there are principles that help evaluate it.

Sometimes Genesis 38:9–10 (Onan) is used to talk about the topic, but that passage mainly deals with rebellion and Onan’s refusal to fulfill a family duty, not masturbation itself.

It is also common to relate it to Jesus’ teaching on lust (Matthew 5:27–30). Many times masturbation is connected to sexual fantasies, pornography, or disordered desire. When there is lust, the biblical issue is clear: the sin is in the heart, not only in the external act (Matthew 5:28).

In addition, the Bible presents sexuality as part of the marriage covenant and a mutual giving, not as a practice centered on the self (1 Corinthians 7:2–5). Therefore, even if the Bible does not mention it, it does call the believer to live with self-control, holiness, and without slavery (1 Corinthians 6:12; Galatians 5:22–23).

The practical question is: can it be done for the glory of God, with clean faith and without being dominated by it? (1 Corinthians 10:31; Romans 14:23). If the practice is fueled by lust, pornography, constant guilt, or addiction, the wisest thing is to seek freedom and holy habits.
