What does the Bible say about tattoos?
The New Testament does not give a direct prohibition about tattoos, so they are not sin in themselves. This falls under what the Bible calls "matters of conscience" (Romans 14:5, 23).
However, there are biblical principles that should guide the decision: • Motivation matters: everything should be done for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). • The believer’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). • We should not conform to the world (Romans 12:2). • External appearance should never be more important than inner character (1 Peter 3:3–4). • Christian testimony before others should be considered (2 Corinthians 5:20).
Leviticus 19:28 prohibited tattoos in Israel due to their connection with pagan rituals, although Christians are no longer under that law. Even so, the principle of living in holiness remains.
In summary: a tattoo is not automatically sin, but each believer should examine their motive, pray for wisdom, and act with a clean conscience before God (James 1:5).
