Why did the wise men bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh?

Matthew 2 only says that they offered Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). The Bible does not officially explain the meaning, but historically they have been understood like this:

Gold: a royal gift β€” recognizes Jesus as King (Matthew 2:2, 11).

Frankincense: used in worship β€” points to His sacred dignity (Exodus 30:34; Matthew 2:11).

Myrrh: used as perfume and in preparation for death β€” anticipates suffering and death (Mark 15:23; John 19:39–40).
