What does the Bible say about the three Wise Men?

The Bible does not affirm that there were three. That idea arises because three gifts are mentioned: gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). But the text does not say how many wise men there were, nor does it mention their names. The traditional names (Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar) come from tradition, not from Scripture.

They also did not visit Jesus on the night of His birth in the manger. Matthew 2:11 says they arrived at a house, which indicates that the meeting happened later, possibly months or even more time after.

The wise men came "from the east" (Matthew 2:1), probably from Persia. It is possible they knew prophecies like Balaam’s about a "star that will come out of Jacob" (Numbers 24:17) or Daniel’s prophecies (Daniel 9:24–27).

They were guided by a special heavenly sign, known as the star of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:2). When they found Jesus, they worshiped Him and offered valuable gifts (Matthew 2:11). They also obeyed God when they were warned in dreams and did not return to Herod (Matthew 2:12).

The wise men are an example of spiritual wisdom: they sought Christ, recognized Him as King, worshiped Him, and obeyed God.
