What does the Bible say about gambling? Is gambling a sin?

The Bible does not mention "casino," "lottery," or "sports betting" as such, but it strongly warns against the love of money, greed, and the pursuit of quick riches (1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5; Proverbs 13:11). It also teaches the value of honest work and responsibility (2 Thessalonians 3:10; Proverbs 14:23).

It is true that the Bible mentions "casting lots" (drawings), but not as bets to win money; rather, as a method to make decisions in certain contexts (Leviticus 16:8; Joshua 18:10; Acts 1:26). That does not justify gambling for money.

The moral problem of gambling is often in what drives it and what it produces: • it can feed greed and materialism (Colossians 3:5) • it can lead to addiction and ruin • it usually implies one person gains at the expense of others’ loss

Jesus taught that one cannot serve God and money (Matthew 6:24). Therefore, even if the Bible does not explicitly forbid every "small bet," the believer must evaluate motives, self-control, testimony, and good stewardship of what God has given.
