What is the importance of Christian baptism?
Baptism is important because Jesus commanded it as part of discipleship: make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19β20). Therefore, baptism is not an "extra"; it is an act of obedience.
In the Bible, Christian baptism is a public sign of faith: the person declares that they belong to Christ. It is also a powerful symbol: it represents death to sin and a new life with Jesus, reflecting His death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12).
Something key: baptism is closely tied to the Christian life, but it is not what saves. The Bible shows the pattern: first believe in Christ and then be baptized (Acts 2:41; Acts 16:14β15). Baptism is the external testimony of an internal change.
