What does the Bible say about Christian tithing? Should a Christian tithe?
The tithe (giving 10%) was a command within the Law of Moses for Israel, related to the temple and the Levitical system (Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:21, 26; Deuteronomy 14:22β29). It was used to support the Levites, celebrate certain feasts, and help the needy.
In the New Testament, believers are not shown as obligated by a specific percentage. However, the Bible does teach that it is right and necessary to support the work of God, support those who teach the Word, and help the needy (1 Corinthians 9:13β14; 1 Timothy 5:17β18; 2 Corinthians 8).
The central New Testament principle is: give generously, joyfully, and without pressure, according to what each one can (1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 8:12; 2 Corinthians 9:6β7). Some take 10% as a reference or personal minimum, but not as a universal law for the Christian.
